Switching over from feeding three times a day to twice?

I was just curious as to whether there is a rule of thumb in regards to how far apart twice-a-day feedings should be. I have a six month old boxer who has been fed three times a day since we got him and I am afraid he will get too hungry. I have always been a rescuer and have never had a little guy this young so I would appreciate any advice you can give.
