How does a vcr/dvd combo connect to hdtv to record live tv broadcasts?

vcr/dvd combo has no turner, plays well, but requires something called an external tuner. The hdtv is the first thing to connect from the coax cable. The vcr/dvd combo is connected into the tv via an hdmi.
